Technical Occupational Curriculum
1. PURPOSE OF THE TECHNICAL OCCUPATIONAL CURRICULUM (TOC)

To provide a foundation of quality, standardised general education which will meet the interest and aptitude of our learners, preparing them to access employment or occupational workplace-based learning. It may also enable the learners to access a vocational qualification at a technical or vocational training college.
2. ADMISSION TO WH DE KLERK SCHOOL

The profile for a learner to register at our school, is determined on the following criteria:

Learners are assessed through a comprehensive assessment process as determined by the Department of Basic Education, which indicates an interest and aptitude in practical, skills-orientated and applied learning.

New learners are placed in Orientation Phase 1, 2 or Year 1 after being evaluated by writing year placement tests (13-15 years) depending on available space in the school.
Expected age groups of learners:

Orientation Phase 1: age 12 to 13

Orientation Phase 2: age 13 to 14

Year 1: age 14 to 15

Year 2: age 15 to 16

Year 3: age 16 to 17

Year 4: age 17 to 18

This subject is compulsory for learners in Year 1 – 4 and is offered as enrichment. It is not an exam subject.

Orientation Phase 1 and 2: Basic hand and subject skills.

BOYS - Term 1 – 3: Boys will choose 3 subjects from the following options - 1 subject per term:
Welding
Motor Mechanics
Plumbing
Woodworking and Timber
Electricians work
Maintenance
Term 4: The subject chosen as specialist subject for Year 2 – 4.
Overalls are compulsory in all workshops and must be provided for by the learner.

GIRLS - Term 1 – 3: The girls will rotate every ± 7 weeks per subject:
Hairdressing
Food Production
Early Childhood Development
Office Administration
Term 4: The subject chosen as specialist subject for Year 2 – 4.

Year 2 – 4:​
The “TO Curriculum” determines that learners in Year 2 must choose only one occupational subject. They will then specialize in the subject up to Year 4, if they comply with the promotion requirements.
